SORSOGON |

| On the southeastern tip of the Bicol Peninsula, SORSOGON , capital
of the same-name province, makes a good base for visiting Donsol and
exploring the beaches of the eastern seaboard, where waves hammer in
from the Pacific and surfing is a growing industry. One of the nicest
beaches is Rizal beach , in the barrio of Gubat, a twenty-minute jeepney
ride from Sorsogon, where you can get an ageing but adequate room at the
Rizal Beach Resort Hotel (no phone; $10-20). In Sorsogon itself the
Dalisay Hotel, in VL Peralta Street (tel 056/589 1242; $5-10), is one of
your few decent options, with simple doubles. There are two major
festivals in Sorsogon: the Kasanggayahan Festival on October 24-27 and
the Ginubat festival in the Gubat area on June 11-12. Both celebrate the
town's history with street parades, banca (boat) races and beauty
pageants. |
